BRAINSPOTTING

What is Brainspotting?

Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that focuses on accessing and processing deep-seated emotions and traumas by identifying brainspots in a person's field of vision. Unlike talk therapy where the prefrontal cortex is often activated (responsible for decision-making, problem-solving, and conscious thinking); Brainspotting bypasses the prefrontal cortex and activates the subcortical cortex (this is the deeper part of the brain where memories, emotions, traumas are stored).

Brainspotting can support in the following:

  • Trauma Resolution
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Performance Enhancement
  • Chronic Pain Management
  • Attachment Disruption
  • Phobias and PTSD

What can I experience in a Brainspotting session?

It's important to note that the unique experience during a Brainspotting session can vary from person to person. Some individuals may experience intense emotional releases, while others may experience a deep sense of relaxation or clarity.

Common experiences during a Brainspotting session can include the following:

Emotional Responses:

  • Release of Emotions: Clients may experience a release of intense emotions linked to traumatic experiences. This can include feelings of sadness, fear, anger, or relief.

  • Insight and Understanding: Brainspotting may bring about insights and a deeper understanding of one's emotions, memories, and thought patterns.

  • Catharsis: Clients might experience a sense of catharsis as they process and express suppressed emotions.

Physical Responses:

  • Body Sensations: Clients may experience sensations in different parts of their body as they focus on specific brainspots. This can include tension, tingling, or warmth.

  • Tremors or Shaking: Some individuals may experience involuntary movements or tremors, which are considered part of the body's natural response to releasing stored tension and trauma.

  • Relaxation: As the session progresses, clients may feel a sense of relaxation and relief from physical tension.

Integration:

  • Integration of Insights: Brainspotting aims to facilitate the integration of new insights and perspectives, helping clients adaptively reprocess traumatic memories.

  • Improved Regulation: Clients may notice improvement in emotional regulation leading to a greater sense of control over their emotional responses.
